There's this show on Animal Planet called "Meercat Manor." It's on tv right now, and I'm thoroughly addicted...
A group of scientists from Cambridge University have been studying this family of meerkats in South Africa for over ten years. They have all of these remote control cameras installed all across several miles of meerkat territory. The way they have the show set-up, they can tell what the family members are doing all of the time. It's crazy how intricate their little matriarchal society is, and there's a narrator (Sean Astin) who guides the viewer step-by-step in the goings-on.
Poor little meerkats.
There's life, death, family quarrelling, un-planned pregnancies (only the head meerkat is allowed to breed), oustings, joustings...you name it. It's a soap opera that's better than any daytime show I've ever seen (and at one time I admit I was a "Young and the Restless" junkie, but that was in college and that was a little while ago...)
Ultimately, it's a nice diversion from the craziness surrounding day-to-day life. I'm amazed at how a good story, no matter how or where it comes from, transports me away.
THAT is what I want to do.
Every day of my life, I want to make some kind of dent, you know? I want to move people with the things that I create, the things that I do.
Maybe I won't be successful everyday. But I can try.
Welcome to my blog. I've got my training wheels on.
